Every year, the college application process gets more unpredictable, more grueling, and more competitive. The 2025-26 season promises to bring a multitude of changes and new challenges. First, the good news: The number of high school graduates peaked in 2025 meaning a marginally smaller pool for 2026 and the years to come. (Your younger siblings may have an easier time).
The bad news: Colleges are now contending with the use of AI, massive governmental cuts in research funding, and the elimination of DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) from the equation. The landscape is rapidly shifting. Last year, the number of applications increased dramatically at every level from the Ivy League to state universities while admissions rates dropped with many top schools below 5%. Here are a few trends to watch out for. Schools will go beyond the essay. Schools such as UChicago, Brown, Amherst, Duke, Hamilton, among others now offer the opportunity y to upload an optional introductory video. (Note: optional is never really optional). Others, such as Princeton, require the submission of a classroom assignment with teacher feedback. MIT allows for the submission of an optional portfolio or research supplement. Watch for more focus on recruiting ED1 and ED2 to boost yield. Direct admits will gain traction especially at state universities. Legacy doesn't go as far as it used to.
If it sounds daunting, it is. But there are two truths to remember. The first truth is that there are far more qualified candidates than there are seats at the top schools. The second truth is that there are far more excellent colleges and universities than just the USNews top twenty. No matter what your GPA, SAT/ACT scores, and ECs, there are plenty of colleges out there that offer a solid fit for your interests and goals.
From first thinking about college to making that ultimate decision before May 1 (or later if you end up playing the waitlist game), we're here to help you navigate the circuitous maze that is college admissions. We'll help you put together a balanced list, evaluate whether to apply ED1, ED2, SCEA, or EA. We'll guide you in crafting a compelling application that "sells" the real YOU. (Hint: It's about what you can do for the college, not what the college can do for you). It may be a rollercoaster ride, but you will get to your destination.
